Here, we discuss the control of the dynamic range of Josephson parametric amplifiers by using Josephson junction arrays. We discuss gain, bandwidth, noise, and dynamic range properties of both a transmission line and a lumped element based parametric amplifier. Based on these investigations we derive useful design criteria, which may find broad application in the development of practical parametric amplifiers.

A low-noise series-array Josephson junction parametric amplifier
We have obtained parametric gain at 19 GHz from a distributed Josephson junction parametric amplifier whose active gain medium consists of a series array of 1000 Josephson junctions embedded in a coplanar waveguide. When cooled to 1.7 K the amplifier provides 16 dB gain in a mode where the internally generated double sideband noise referred to input is 0.560.1 K. This noise is consistent with N...

Detecting single-photon level signals—carriers of both classical and quantum information—is particularly challenging for low-energy microwave frequency excitations. Here we introduce a superconducting amplifier based on a Josephson junction transmission line. Unlike current standing-wave parametric amplifiers, this traveling wave architecture robustly achieves high gain over a bandwidth of seve...
متن کاملA Wideband, Low-Noise Superconducting Amplifier with High Dynamic Range
Amplifiers are ubiquitous in electronics and play a fundamental role in a wide range of scientific measurements. From a user’s perspective, an ideal amplifier has very low noise, operates over a broad frequency range, and has a high dynamic range it is capable of handling strong signals with little distortion. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain all of these characteristics simultaneously....
متن کاملNondegenerate three-wave mixing with the Josephson ring modulator
The Josephson ring modulator (JRM) is a device, based on Josephson tunnel junctions, capable of performing nondegenerate mixing in the microwave regime without losses. The generic scattering matrix of the device is calculated by solving coupled quantum Langevin equations. Its form shows that the device can achieve quantum-limited noise performance both as an amplifier and a mixer. Fundamental l...
